The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a

, Temporary, Pharmacy Technician. This is a temporary position not to exc! eed 18 months. This position may be extended or converted to a permanen! t position without further competitive procedures.This position will be located in the

Pharmacy Service

. As a Pharmacy Technician, you are responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to:

• Maintains work flow patterns that assure timely delivery of all pharmacy services and ensures accurate dispensing and record keeping documentation.

• Effectively organizes workload, solves problems and troubleshoots problems.

• Triages appropriate issues to the pharmacist from internal or external patient or staff contacts. Answers telephone calls and attempts to resolve problems at the lowest level possible and manages inquiries in a timely and courteous manner before directing questions to the appropriate member of the pharmacy staff.

• Performs general maintenance and housekeeping tasks for assigned work areas.

• Reports adverse drug events (ADE), near misses, and medication errors and participate! s in quality improvement initiatives to promote patient safety.

• Participates in the medical center medication utilization evaluation (MUE) program by assisting pharmacists with data required to conduct drug use reviews or other medication use monitors.

• Participates in quality improvement activities in all areas of the pharmacy.

• Participates in emergency preparedness activities.

• Serves as a role model to pharmacy students (pharmacist and technician) and residents.

• The technician is responsible for maintaining his/her professional competency by keeping abreast of current literature and regulations, and applies this knowledge in his/her daily duties.

• Assigned work areas are not fully restricted to outpatient; however this will be the primary work assignment. Outpatient technicians will be required to retain competency and perform selected, non-specialized duties of the inpatient technician depending on the! level of competency required such as cart fill and checking, cart and ! medication deliveries and other routine functions common to technician duties.

• Will rotate through all tours according to the outpatient staffing plan including weekend and holiday tours.

Dispensing

• Accurate packaging and labeling of outpatient prescriptions. Ensures drugs dispensed are completely and correctly labeled and packaged in full compliance with Federal rules and regulations.

• Replenish supplies/medications for the fill area

• Conduct general maintenance and housekeeping tasks for the work area assigned

• Dispense medications at the pharmacy window

• Maintain familiarization with the regulations and safe handling requirements for medications and hazardous substances.

• Dispenses controlled substances with accuracy according to current policies and procedures for outpatients.

• Prepare and package medications for mail-out.

• Involved in all activities related to ! the automated dispensing machines, including ScriptPro, Omnicell, medication cart filling, mail processing equipment and Script Talk. Trouble shooting under the supervision of a pharmacist. Responsible for operation and general maintenance of all equipment used is assigned activities and reports malfunctions promptly to supervisors.

• Will rotate through the telephone care unit and process refill requests and other veteran requests.

• Assures appropriate drug storage, including medications brought into the facility by patients.

• Maintains adequate stock and inspects drug storage areas, including checking for outdates, and assure the proper disposition of outdated, recalled or otherwise adulterated medications.

QUALIFICAT! IONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements:
Citizen of the United States.

Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6.

Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Requirements:
GS-6

Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3. Knowledge of, and abili! ty to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires physical exertion such as reaching, bending, standing, walking short and long distances, and climbing to obtain product from moderately high shelving. Occasionally may need to lift up to 50 pounds. The majority of work requires extended periods of standing with short periods of sitting to complete tasks. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical in a pharmacy setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, shoe covers and hair covers to minimize risks.
