Medical Technologist
. This position will be located in the
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS)
. The incumbent serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of Specimen Collection, Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunohematology, and Microbiology. As a Medical Technologist, you are responsibl! e for the following duties to include, but not limited to:
Per! forms test procedures using manual and/or instrument techniques.
Performs quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.
Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments.
Performs venipunctures and arterial punctures for specimen collection.
Work Schedule:
The tour of duty for this position is Midnight Shift, 11:30p.m. - 7:30a.m. Monday - Friday with rotating holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements:

Education/Experience requirement:
- Applicants must possess an associate's degree in laboratory science or medic! al laboratory technology from an accredited institution
possess at least 3 years of directly related, full time work experience;
OR
-
Applicants must have completed an equivalent program composed of at least 60 semester hours, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either: (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and have laboratory training that includes completion of a NAACLS approved clinical laboratory training program with at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty that the individual performs high complexity testing in,
AND
possess at least 3 years of directly related, full time work experience.
Note:
A! bachelors degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technolog! y from an accredited institution will satisfy the education and 3 years of experience requirement.
Certification:
- All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
Applicants who are within 90 days of graduating with a degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution may apply for this position, provided they fully meet all basic requirements by the date of appointment.

completion of a medical technology clinical practice program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) is required at the GS-9 level,

either (a) or (b) below:
(a) Completion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level,
OR
(b) 2 years of progre! ssively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in! medical technology or directly related field, or equivalent graduate degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work consists of both desk, standing and physical exertion. There will be walking, bendi! ng, standing, retrieving items from shelves and cabinets and carrying moderately heavy items such as bulk reagents and equipment. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
