EDUCATION DEBT REDUCTION PROGRAM (EDRP): Physicians appointed to Veterans Health Administration may be eligible to apply for benefits under the Education Debt Reduction Program. This program is limited to available funding.

The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

DUTIES:
THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED

The psychiatrist will provide outpatient care in the Mental Health Clinic to veterans with a variety of diagnoses. He/she will also work with a multidisciplinary treatment team to provide care to veterans participating in residential programs in the 100-bed Domiciliary. There will also be some consultation/liaison work with the adjacent hospital/nursing home/primary care clinic. On-call coverage for the entire VA Black Hills Health Care System is shared with all full-time psychiatrists (6 others) and is generally by phone consultation with the ER/Urgent Care. Weekend rounds on the 10-bed inpatient psychiatric unit are included in the on-call rotation. These rounds may be done via telepsychiatry depending on where the psychiatrist chooses to live.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS :

  • Citizen of the United States .
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine . The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure. Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or completion of an accredited residency in Psychiatry.
