U. S. Citizenship DUTIES:
The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Part-time , Permanent , Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist . This position will be located in the Imaging Service Line. As a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, you are responsible for performing Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound, and general radiographic procedures for the patients of this medical center as well as other duties necessary for functionality of a radiology department.
The following duties to include, but not limited to:
CT examinations including but no! t limited to the chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, extremities, and neck.
Ultrasound (U/S) scanning including but not limited to the liver, gall bladder, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, adrenals, kidneys, bladder, thyroid, extremity venous systems, aorta, iliac, and complex carotid dopplers.
General radiographic procedures.
Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table; prepare pre-procedural activities including room preparation and arrangement of equipment and material needed for patient procedures.
Physically assess patient and gather relevant information from the medical record, health care providers and patientÂ's significant other. Assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure such as immobility and contrast reaction.
Prepares oral and injectable contrast and other chemical mixtures as necessary. Follow prescribed protocols required to perform procedures. Apply aseptic techniques and universal body precautions.
Administer contrast material using intravenous ! skills under the direction of the radiologist, according to protocols.
Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events. Apply first aid or basic life support practices related to radiography.
Perform radiography-related post-procedure care for patients.
Process images with digital image acquisition and processing.
Perform computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, credit of patient visits, complications and /or quality improvement activities of the Radiology Department. Performs daily maintenance of head and body phantoms, such as changing water, cleaning and removing air bubbles.
Check and make minor adjustments to equipment such as setting wedges, or changing adjusters.
Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, and nursing personnel.
Balance the needs of the patients and staff while performing complex scans.
Maintain a c! lean work area and adequate level of supplies within their assigned roo! ms at all times.
Provide training to student radiographers from affiliated programs and facilitates the attainment of established program objectives.
Practice hospital safety, radiation safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times in accordance with age and/or gender specific departmental procedures.
The incumbent is responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the picture archiving computer system (PACS) network. The incumbent assists house staff in transmission to off-site locations. The incumbent maintains the cassettes/plates/workstations (i.e. primary/secondary plate erase, cleanliness of QA stations, etc.) as directed by the manufacturer.
Provide education to patients and their families on Imaging procedures. Perform clerical and file room duties related to patient care including management of x-ray jackets to outside facilities, reg! istering exams, check-in of received films or other media, making and uploading CDs.
Basic knowledge of functionality of the PACS system.
The incumbent may be needed to participate in on-call as designated in the call schedule as determined by the supervisor.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position will be primarily evening shifts. On-call, rotating shifts, evenings, days, weekends, and holidays will be required; flexibility in tours and days of week will also be required.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements:
Citizen of the United States.
Certification - All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R).
Experience or Education - Completion of full-time training course of ! at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school d! iagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or and associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations:
GS-10: Requires a minimum of one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSA's at that level.
In addition the candidate must meet the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*).
- (1) Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes;
- (2) Skill to recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might! result in increased exposures, and recommend methods to prevent such exposures;
- (3) Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, in order to understand the operation of the equipment; and
Note: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidateÂ's education and experience and recommend the step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.
Clinical experience in ultrasound and CT preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positioning a variety of patients requires heavy lifting (must be able to lift 45lbs or more) and body alignment. Standing, walking and sitting for a variety of time is required. Repetitive arm motion occurs during sonography.
