The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pi! ne forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly wester! n hospitality. The VA BHHCS provides primary, surgical, behavioral health, community living center (nursing home care), and domiciliary (residential rehabilitation treatment program - RRTP) care for Veterans residing in western South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network (VISN 23).

Must be proficient in written and spoken English DUTIES:
Provider will work in a general outpatient mental health clinic. Duties include: Psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and some limited psychotherapy. Provider works in the context of a multidisciplinary treatment team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and other disciplines within th! e mental health field. Some coverage on the inpatient psychiatric until! will be required when the regular NP/PA for that area is on leave. This coverage will include performing H&P on new admissions, monitoring medical condition of patients, and discharge summaries, and time will be blocked out for this activity as needed.

Work Schedule : Monday-Friday, Generally 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, but may vary one or two days per week to provide early morning or late afternoon clinic hours. No night or weekend on-call duties are required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Physician Assistant Qualifications:
1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.)

2. Education or Training. The candidate must meet one of the following:
a) A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accredi! tation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or b) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or c) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technical. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

3. Certification. As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

4. Physical Standards. A pre-placement physical exami! nation shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physica! l and mental fitness for candidates for appointment.
5. English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Nurse Practitioner Qualifications:
1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.)
2. Physical Standards. A pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness for candidates for appointment.
3. English Language Proficiency. Nurse Practitioners appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
4.Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the tim! e the program was completed by the applicant. 1) The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN), (formerly the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)), 2) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an accrediting arm of the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN). The CCNE accredits bachelors and masters degree programs.
5. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the ACEN or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]

Preferred qualifications:
Experience as a CNP or PA-C is desirable.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred.
