Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Department (ED)

. This p! osition will be located in the Primary and Specialty Care Service line. As an RN-Emergency Department, you are responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to:

The RN triages Emergency Department Veterans, they may have co morbidities and present with a wide range of chief complaints including but not limited to cardiac (atypical chest pain, dysrhythmias), chronic pain, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, integumentary, post op problems and/or mental health issues.

Obtain and document patientsÂ' vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, weight, oxygen saturation and postural vital signs). Recognizes and reports abnormal values to the provider.

Prepare patient for exam, provide privacy and emotional support.

Collect, label and send laboratory specimens as ordered according to policy and procedure.

Move, lift, transfer and transport patients as necessary using proper equipment and co! rrect transfer techniques. Assist patients to ambulate and transfer safely.

Follow standard procedures set by infection control in all aspects of daily duties.

Document in the medical record including medical history, allergies, current medications, observations, treatment given, reassessment to ensure accurate records and quality of care, using standard nomenclature and approved forms.

Clean Emergency Department equipment according to policy and procedures.

Assist in maintaining adequate inventory of equipment and supplies.

Assist with preparation of patients designated for admission including separation, securing and inventory of clothing/valuables.

Perform treatments, including but not limited to: sterile dressing changes, ace bandage application, unna boot application, suture removal, application of heat/cold as ordered.

Able to measure and fit and educate patient on prosthetic equipment such as crutc! hes.

Rapidly assess and reassess as needed.

Transport! stable patients to procedures or inpatient units.

Clean and prepare bays for the next patient, obtaining supplies and laundry.

Assist with minor procedures / ear irrigations when indicated.

Critical thinking skills and ability to shift tasks and/or responsibilities at a moment's notice in a fast paced environment.

Education of patient/family or significant other including disease process, self-care, treatment plan and/or discharge instructions.

Utilize nursing research and literature to maintain and advance current practice level.

NOTE: Assignment to other areas of the service line, medical center, or other CBOC's may be required. The Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED) reports to the ED

Nurse Manager and works in collaboration with his/her assigned CORE team, however, assignments may be made to other areas for purposes of cross coverage.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizen of the United States.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nu! rsing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nu! rsing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

2-3 years Emergency Room, ICU, or other applicable Critical Care/Triage experience preferred.

2-3 years medical surgical nursing in an acute care setting experience preferred.

BSN preferred.

ACLS certification preferred.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant ! selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy. • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

• Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in ! Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in! Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

• Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

• Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

• Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with B! SN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying of light items. The work requires agility and dexterity and may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients. In many situations, the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and similar activities.
