Registered Respira! tory Therapist (RRT)

. This position will be located in the Pr! imary and Specialty Medicine Service Line, in the Respiratory Care and Diagnostic Service. The RRT (Inpatient/Outpatient Team member) displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence, and is responsible for the individual program within the service and serves as a mentor to other staff. The services are performed in accordance with the guidelines established by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), and policies and procedures of the VAHCS. The protocol and procedures are established for the treatment, management, evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities associated with the cardiopulmonary system. The services include, but are not limited to, the following activities performed under a provider:

The incumbent is responsible for performance of all inpatient/outpatient responsibilities.

Demonstrates knowledge and level of expertise required to perform Respiratory Ca! re and Diagnostic services to care for patients.

Responds to consults for outpatient staff and patient education.

Develops and assures policy and procedures for areas are current and accurate.

The (RRT) will act as a liaison to providers for testing performed, equipment, supplies and request for special services.

The functioning characteristics of commonly used respiratory equipment and accessory devices sufficient to set up, operate, sterilize, and calibrate basic equipment.

Knowledge of standard respiratory drugs (e. g., bronchodilators) including drug action and effects, recommended dosages, and the requirements for administering and storing the drugs.

Possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform both basic and advanced therapeutic procedures for adults through their lifespan.

Maintains competency and confidentiality of written, electronic, and verbal patient/employee information, and i! s a mentor in all areas of the clinic.

Delivers respiratory ca! re as needed in the more complex respiratory care procedures.

Works and functions within a safe manner including infection control and operation of equipment.

Participates in the audit of respiratory care and specialty clinic care, recommending changes where indicated.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of the patients served.

Responsible for monitoring compliance within the clinic area, monitoring outcomes, and development of policies and procedures which comply with VA Directives and Clinical Practice Recommendations.

Interacts effectively with patients, physicians and other members of the health care team.

Recognition of the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk.

Safely provides interventions, treatments or medications as described by VAHCS policies, procedures and protocols.

Skill Requirement:
The RRT p! ractices professionally, must be reliable, and be able to work independently and be self-motivated. The RRT is responsible for performing the following job duties in accordance with mission, vision, and values of the VA Health Care System:

Administration of medication to the cardiopulmonary system.

Ventilator support, including maintenance and management of life support systems, and the patient/ventilator interface.

Bronchopulmonary drainage and breathing exercises.

Pulmonary rehabilitation.

CPAP/AutoPAP/BiPAP Therapy.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Rapid Response Team.

Blood gas analysis.

Patient/family education.

In performance of official duties, the employee has regular access to verbal communication, and printed and electronic data and files containing sensitive information which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974, as well as other applicable l! aw, regulation and practice.

Work Schedule:
The tou! r of duty for this position varies; and will require flexibility in tours and days of the week; to include day, evening and/or overnights with weekend and holiday rotation. Further discussion of the work schedule for this position will be discussed during the interview process.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements:
Citizen of the United States.

Certification: Possess a certificate as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:

(a) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or

(b) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for ! a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.

Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Requirements:
GS-7:

  • None beyond the Basic Requirements.
GS-8:
  • 1 year of successful experience, related to respiratory therapy, at the GS-7 level or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability needed to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide emergency or critical respiratory care; service as a shift leader or supervisor or sole responsible respiratory therapist on a shift; and to plan and conduct training sessions with respiratory therapy students, hospital staff, patients, and family members.
Grade Determination:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring Veterans a! nd objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected Veterans and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to Veterans who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on Veteran needs.
