The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care service, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Care is provided to eligible veterans in eastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, and southwestern Minnesota. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and transitional care. The Sioux Falls VA is part of VA Midwest Healthcare System (VISN 23), which includes facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

DUTIES:
This position is under the direction of the Chief, Canteen Service, or his/her designee. The selected individual takes an active part in assisting customers in the selection of merchandise in sales area which does not require specialized merchandise knowledge. The selected individual also greets customers entering the retail store. Answers customer questions and advises customers on price, availability, and location of items of merchandise. The selected individual operates a cash register and maintains a change fund in accordance with VCS (Veterans Canteen Service) operating procedures. Processes sales slips, makes change, and prepares daily cash and sales reports.The selected individual assists in ensuring optimum stock availability by taking periodic stock counts. Displays, prices, and replenishes merchandise in accordance with supervisor instructions. The selected individual will perform general housekeeping duties in the selling area, such as, cleaning fixtures and dusting merchandise. The selected individual advises supervisor of suspected cases of shop lifting and other safety and/or security violations. The selected individual will participate in store inventories at required intervals. The selected individual will ensure the security of cash, fixed assets and merchandise inventory. Tour of Duty: The tour of duty is typically a day tour, Monday through Friday, flexibility in tour of duty will be required . In November and December a Saturday shift will be required with the same tour of duty.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies and other characteristics:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Knowledge/experience of general retail procedures and tasks.
  • Customer service skills within the retail environment.
  • Technical practices within the retail environment.
The selected individual must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). The selected individual must have the ability to read and interpret instructions and apply simple math calculations. The selected individual must demonstrate good customer skills via direct involvement and/or training. The selected individual must have a good working knowledge and experience of retail sale as well as other related duties such as inventory control, merchandise replenishment, skills for file/records management, cash handling/accountability, reports/correspondence preparation, display, housekeeping, and record keeping skills.

PHYSICAL EFFORT : Work requires constant standing & walking, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and pushing and pulling. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, & occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of lifting devices or other coworkers. Exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather; temperature extremes; working around wet or slippery floors, or other day-to-day proximity to similar hazards to personal safety.
